Continuing a Holiday Tradition: Mounted Patrols Return to Miromar Outlets this Friday

ESTERO, Fla. (November 23, 2020) – People tend to get a little ‘giddy’ when they see Patrol Officer Jeanne Shadduck and her sidekick at Miromar Outlets. And those smiles are exactly Shadduck’s goal whenever she saddles up Rocket, her 10-year-old paint quarter horse, as part of the shopping center’s annual Lee County Sheriff’s Mounted Patrol.

“Our association with these beautiful animals adds a sense of comfortability between officer and civilian,” said Shadduck, who has patrolled Miromar Outlets for over 20 years – nearly a decade of that atop Rocket. “Children and adults visit Miromar Outlets just to pet and take their pictures with the horses. For some, it’s the only time they’re able to come in contact with a horse.”

Shadduck and her fellow equestrians — all veterans of the shopping center’s holiday season patrol – take to the parking lots every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, beginning Black Friday on November 27 through Sunday December 20.

“Parents and grandparents from all over Southwest Florida call every year to find out when the mounted patrol returns,” said Jeff Staner, vice president of Miromar Outlets. “They time their visits based on when they can see the horses. I know of a lot of children who have grown up seeing the horses every year.”

Much like those visitors, the rest of the mounted patrol posse and their horses are also long-time holiday participants at Miromar Outlets. They include Susan Chauvin with Major, a 21-year-old registered paint quarter horse; Mike Irby and 25-year-old Pistolette, also a registered paint quarter horse; and Kecia Angelo with 10-year-old Fred, a Percheron-Friesian rescue who joined the group three years ago.

Once a frequent holiday sight at local malls for 30 years, Miromar Outlets is now the only center continuing the tradition of mounted patrols. At Miromar, they patrol parking lots, locate lost cars and packages, escort shoppers to cars and provide additional security.

The Lee County Mounted Patrol is comprised of staffers and their personal horses who have completed comprehensive training by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office in community policing procedures, including traffic control, parking lot patrolling and basic aid to shoppers.

“We really appreciate the work and support of the Lee County Sheriff’s Mounted Patrol,” said Staner.

The mounted patrol saddles up at Miromar Outlets every Friday and Saturday from 6 to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m.

Miromar Outlets is closed Thanksgiving Day. It opens for Black Friday, November 27, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Leading up to Christmas Day, the mall will open as early as 9 a.m. to accommodate the influx of expected shoppers.
